It was the final days of April. In southwestern
Montana that's usually a good time for flyfishing. Daily hatches
of march browns and skwalas had been on the river for the last two
weeks. To say we were excited would have been an understatement.
The phone rang, and suddenly it got real quiet.
On the other end of the line was John Cook, the owner of Backdoor
Outiftters eight driving hours away in Stevensville, Montana. John
told of sudden high water caused by a recent warming trend.
John said this would not be a good weekend
to come over. It might get worse - much worse, but then again, there's
a small chance it might get better. "What do you guys want
to do?" he asked.
"I'll talk it over with the guys, and
call you back in a half hour."
Hmmm - we could stay home and mow our
lawns or ...
we could face the uncertainty of rising water, the challenge of
new rivers, finicky trout and possible stormy weather. The vote
was unanimous...
Let's go to Montana!
